Diet and weight loss….Myth vs Reality….

Diet and weight loss….the ‘D’ word of this generation.

Im my more than 20 years of medical experience, I have tried and prescribed multiple ways to help people of very walk of life to loss weight. Very few with success but a lot in disappointments….

First , what’s ideal weight?

There are many theoretical values and arguments for the same. But ideally speaking, for me , ideal weight  for a person is “what he feel comfortable at”. It can be few pounds up or down. But main thing is comfort level of the individual.

After all these hits and trials, the golden rule which I can extract is that follow your genes with local environmental conditions.

In summary, you were built by almighty to a certain environment according to your genes with somewhat external environment influences.

So enjoy your time on this planet, eat what suits your great grand parents if you live in same locality. Most of our elders lives happy and long life without much of these new generation diseases.

If you have moved to certain areas, try to eat only locally grown vegetables and other foods.

Next make input and output calculations. If you have taken lots of calories then you have to burn them also. That means do some physical exercises and physical work.

Aerobics is must have.  Simple skipping or swimming etc.

Another must have is meditation. Find a peaceful place and spend some time with the most precious person in your life ….that is you only.

Enjoy the local delicacies and don’t worry…be happy.

And remember if you are happy and comfortable, the world can wait.

Welcome wonderful beautiful winter….

Now here comes winter… the season of laziness and shivering. With snow covering many parts of the country, the natural beauty is to be cherish about. Every corner covered in white blanket of snow, frozen tall trees all looks beautiful and ghostly.

Here I remember a beautiful experience with one of my colleague who first time witnessed the snow fall.

When I was posted in northern parts of my country as a medic, I have a colleague who was very excited to be appointed at this place as he has seen snow fall only in pictures and movies. This area being considered a hard area according to service rules  and also due to geographical location. I being accustomed to these kinds of weather and geography, easily adjusted to the working environment.

Our colleague was eagerly waiting for his first snow fall experience.

The ‘d’ day finally arrived . The clouds started playing with winds and chill filled with air. As this started from the morning and by afternoon, the sky was dark with clouds. And then suddenly the sky burst with beautiful snowflakes making their ways to the earth joyfully like lover’s going to mate.

Our colleague happiness now no boundaries. He was filled with ecstasy and started jumping with joy. The scene of fresh snowfall is really mind blowing. We all enjoyed till we get exhausted. But our friend was too happy to take rest. He kept the enjoyment going till midnight.

As with this part of the country, the snowfall continued for three to four days without break. There was 8-10 feet snowfall everywhere. Only white snowy desert is seen every where. Our friend excitement now turns to depression. He started having nightmares and was shouting at every one.

He has to be airlifted from there and given treatment.

Enjoy this beautiful winter season and god bless all.

Bad economy, some very good and simple ideas

With economy in shambles every corner of the world, there are only few ways forward to as of now. With growth slumping everyday, the life of common peoples are becoming difficult with every passing day.

The common sense should prevail now in everyone of us.

There are few time tested formulas to tide over this situation.

1. Try to save as much as possible.

2. Live within your means without compromising the quality of life.

3. Try to invest in safe investment.

4. Stay invested for long.

Let me briefly describe each of these.

Save at least 10% of your earning every month. It does not matter how bigger or how smaller your earning is. This is the number one and bestest way to become rich.

Living within your means- to be like to stop spending on unnecessary items. If you don’t need a shirt, gadgets or if you can avoid watching movie, let it be ok. This helps in both short and long ways.

Try investing the saved money wisely. You can go for mutual funds, government backed saving account. SIP are good for persons with little financial education. Services of professional with little service charges can be taken.

Be remember, there is alway light at the end of dark tunnel. Magic do happens. Perseverance will win ultimately.

God bless all.

Death….the ultimate journey

Death….the ultimate truth, nobody can escape from.

Culmination of our journey….both good & bad.

The first time i witness  death in front of me, i still remember with full details.

When i was in final year of my medical college, during one of our clinical classes. I was checking some of files of the patient and preparing for our routine classes.

There was this young newly married man who was admitted for some minor problems. He was accompanied by his young wife and mother. He has just finished his meal and was cheerfully taking to his wife.Everything seems quite normal, normal works as usual.

Suddenly the young lady went running towards nurses duty room and there was screaming from the patient bed. The young man has collapsed suddenly and his mother was screaming loudly. The attending doctor and paramedical staff runs for the patient. Curtains was put around, CPR started.

There was pin drop silence in the ward….only screaming of the young lady and old mother.

Nothing could be done. The man was pronounced dead.

The dreams of newly-wed young lady and old mothers all shattered. A young life just ended; for which no humans can do anything.

You may say that how its possible that one time the person is talking and another second he is dead. That’s life dear. We are just like a drop of water which is there in a second and which is evaporated in next second.

The face of that young man, his wife and old mother i still remember vividly. And i also remember the helplessness of medical fraternity to do anything.

That’s while , life is unpredictable. Enjoy every moment you get. Have faith in almighty and love all.

My first experience….

“ srrrrrrrrr…rrrrrrrrrrrr”

“Hold it tight” shout my chief surgeon. “ You will drop it”.

After few more minutes, I was instructed to put this into adjoining other table. I was stunned, immobile.

“ Hurry up, young chap. We have to finish it soon” said the expert chief surgeon.

As I put lifeless full right lower limb in this above knee amputation patient, a young man of 39 year old, shivering ran down my spine.

This was result of approximately 25 minutes of surgery, my first I have fully assisted with chief surgeon. I and another experienced nurse were the two peoples assisting the chief surgeon in the operation theatre that Sunday afternoon. After cutting through the skin, muscle, soft tissue and securing proper hemostasis, the cutter was needed to cut the major leg bone- femur. The noise of srrrrrr….rrrrrrrr was coming from it, reverberating the whole operation theatre.

The chief surgeon has a glance at me and stated closing the wound. I joined them and we finished it without talking much.

The next day as we were taking round of the ward, I was still shaking from my first experience. The patient was moaning in the pain. His wife and two kids was standing beside him. He was having a sensation of phantom limb and was behaving like having normal limb. The chief surgeon console him and we move forward.

This was my first experience with a chief surgeon in any major surgery.

It was lazy Sunday afternoon. The rush was not that much today and we were cruising smoothly. I was very excited as today I was going to assist our chief surgeon independently. The surgery was planned for today and I was chosen as most of staff will be on holiday being sunday and this surgery does not need much expertises assistant.

When I was in internship in my medical  college, I like everyone was very much excited to explore all the new found freedom and responsibility of medical profession. It feels adventurous at times and frustrating at times at the limits of human capabilities. Sometimes you save somebody life but at many times you loss the battle……it keep on going in medical profession everywhere everyday in this world.

Coming to that patient, he was a chronic smoker and has developed complications from continuous, excessive smoking and other diseases to lead to gangrene of his limb with no other alternative but to cut or amputate the limb. A whole life destroyed due to some bad habit. Today there are many ways to compensate for lost of the limb but in those years it was very difficult to think of life without leg. His whole life turned upside down. Education of kids, running of house, old parents…. many dreams shattered

Life is such a wonderful opportunity almighty GOD has given to us. We should love it and enjoy its journey. There are many ups and downs but we should learn from each experiences and move forward with each lessons learned.

God bless all.
